CHASING COLORS
By: Louise Naples
Late October, on Metro North, Chasing Colors
Fall colors in abundance in Woodhaven
We wanted to see more
Went to Grand Central Station
Got our Senior / off Peak tickets
Stocked up on mocha lattes, and muffins
Found our track, our train, our seats
Clickity clack
Mid morning sun shone on the Palisades,
Looking like a tight forest of petrified trees
Adorned in colors, crimson, rust, gold, green, brown
High above the grey water full of chop and white caps
Past marinas and boat yards
Filled with shrouded, slumbering water craft
In their winter hibernation
Forlorn masts reaching skyward out of the shrink wrap
Clickity clack
Wide expanse of the swiftly moving Hudson
One solitary sailor stretching the season
A white triangular speck on the water
Victorian and Georgian homes perched high
On the distant shore
Their windows blinding in the sun
Brick red – red barns, slate blue sheds
Trees brilliant orange against the crisp blue sky
Clickity clack
Strolling Cold Spring
Along the river’s edge
Grey stone West Point in the distance
Clutching hats and jackets in the brisk wind
Old wooden houses in colonial colors
Antique stores, cafes, the old clock shop
The Riverview Restaurant overlooking – a parking lot
Bright blue receptacles for trash, paper, bottles
The lowering sun turns water glistening silver
Late grey clouds with coppery edges and sunrays
Clickity clack
Still lagoons here and there
Rimmed with tall grasses, tan, cream, bark
With fuzzy seeded tops
Readying for takeoff in autumn breezes
Black rock formations protruding from the waters
Causing ripples
Grey bridges small
Grey bridges tall
Bear Mountain
Tappan Zee
Hells Kitchen
Harlem River
